Questionnaire Design Workshop

A questionnaire is a tool used by researchers to obtain information from the participants of a study. It is a popular tool as it is a convenient method of collecting information from a large group of people within a specified period. A questionnaire’s design is therefore crucially important so as to make sure that accurate data is obtained for the study.

• A good questionnaire should be valid. That is, it should ask what it is means to ask
• A good questionnaire should be reliable. That is, it should produce the same responses even if a respondent is asked the same questions over and over again in a brief time span
• A good questionnaire should be interesting. That is, it includes relevant questions organised in a logical manner and there is a higher likelihood that a respondent will complete it.
• A good questionnaire should be succinct. That is, it only includes questions that are relevant

How does one design a good questionnaire?

The design of a good questionnaire is a systematic process. It commences with the researcher(s) thinking about the purpose of the questionnaire and the required output. This may include the topic of the study, the persons who will answer the questionnaire, the kind of information required for the study, the budget, and how quickly the information is required. This is followed by developing a set of questions to obtain this information accurately. Other things to be taken into account include the kinds of questions to include in the questionnaire, the wording and phrasing of the questions, the arrangement and plan of the questionnaire, and evaluating the questionnaire to make sure that the data collected are of good quality. To summarize, the process for questionnaire development involves:

• Specifying the kind of information to be obtained;
• Determining the kind of questionnaire;
• How it will be administered to respondents;
• Determining the content of individual questions;
• Determining the form of response to each question; and
• Determining the phrasing and wording of each question
